I have an aftermarket iPod input adapter that connects to an unused disc changer interface in my trunk. It worked fine for my iPods, but of course it would not charge my iPhone 3GS. I bought this charger adapter at the Apple Store and plugged it in right away. My iPhone threw up an error message and then spontaneously rebooted over and over. I went back to the store and got a replacement. Same result. I conclude that this device does something that makes it incompatible with the kind of iPhone adapter I have. I would recommend only getting this device at a retail store where you can return it easily, rather than here.
From Amazon, I then ordered a Griffin device that claims to do the same thing. It works perfectly, so if you have a choice you might want to try the Griffin first.

I thought I had found the solution to charging my iphone 3gs while listening to music/podcasts on long drives. Does not work with 3gs, no charging occurs. Still searching for an adapter to allow charging and playing with my mini clubman.

I have a 2006 Scion xA, and one of the main reasons I purchased the car is because of the direct iPod connector that works through the head unit. When I purchased my new iPhone 3GS, I was very disappointed to find out that it was not supported to charge in my Scion. I did some research on the Apple iPhone forums, and came across this product that would somewhat fix my problem. The Griffin adapter was originally what I wanted to get, but I couldn't find it anywhere online or in stores, and Griffin themselves was out of stock. So I decided to purchase Scosche Charging Adapter and the product works, but I have a few gripes. I love the way that this product allows me to listen to my iPhone in my car through my head unit, and I can also use some of my Apps to play music like Pandora Radio (I have to used the controls on the phone to work Pandora though). Everytime I plug into my car radio, my phone asks me if I would like to put the phone in airplane mode, which is quite annoying. Another pro is that although my car is not set up for me to talk on my phone through the radio, I can still answer calls through my headset while the unit is plugged in. One of the major con is that there is a very high pitched noise that comes on in the background after using the adapter for a few minutes, and I haven't been able to resolve it. I've tried unplugging my iPhone and plugging it back in, but it didn't fix the problem. Also, this charger seems to give my phone less of a charge than the wall one does. It will charge my phone to 100%, but it doesn't last as long. Overall, I like the product when the high-pitched beep isn't on in the background, and would tell people to do their research before purchasing this product or anyone like it.

I really wanted this to do the job. But it doesn't.
My 2006 Acura TSX has a factory installed iPod adapter which connects to the head unit of the stereo (non-Nav). It worked great - perfect sound, controls from steering wheel, automatically stops when switching to blue-tooth phone call. Then I got an iphone 3G. Of course it doesn't work. So I was forced to use the AUX input and have used several different power plugs. All of the power plugs created the alternator whine. This was tolerable for audiobooks or podcasts, but you couldn't listen to music that way. Strangely, if I used headphones, the whine did not come through.
I had read all the reviews on this page for the Scosche adapter and decided to try it. I was in the Apple store and they had the unit and I asked the "expert" if it would do what I needed. He assured me it would and that I could return it if it failed. I took it right to my car and plugged it in. Immediately got the nag screen which quickly went away. It did charge the battery, but nothing came through the stereo. In fact, it played through the phone's speaker, so it's clear that there was not connection with the data transport part of the dock. Right back in the Apple store for a refund.
Bottom line - this device is marketed by claiming it will return your capability to what it was before you upgraded to a modern ipod or iphone. It will not do that. However, it may decrease the whine you get using you AUX input.
My gripe is that there are a lot of folks involved in integrating the new players the cars. It seems to me that either the power adapter folks, the AUX line folks or Apple itself should have seen this coming and fixed it rather than forcing us to buy one more cable or adapter to correct something that the engineers should have accounted for in the first place.

Does not work with what I bought it for my Pioneer Avic N5 and my external battery. You would think it would work with everything iphone.
