The third-generation iPod shuffle is the talk of the music world. Not just because it's incredibly small--half the size of the previous generation. And not just because it holds up to 1,000 songs and supports multiple playlists. It's the talk of the town because it's the only music player in the world that talks to you. The new VoiceOver feature lets iPod shuffle tell you what song is playing and who's performing it. It also tells you the names of your playlists. With VoiceOver--and with the controls conveniently located on the earbud cord--it's even easier to navigate your music. You can do it without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you're doing.

The iPod shuffle 3G: The First Music Player That Talks to You

World's Smallest Music Player

Ultra-Compact, Ultra-Sleek
Its compact, anodized aluminum design is nearly half the size of the previous iPod shuffle and smaller than a AA battery. But don't be fooled by its diminutive nature. It might be small on the outside, but it holds a lot on the inside. With iPod shuffle now available in 4 GB capacity, you can take up to 1,000 songs with you anywhere. And with the controls located where you can quickly access them, it's also easier to use.

Most Wearable
The iPod shuffle comes with a brilliant stainless steel clip that lets you securely wear your music no matter where you are. Clip it to your workout gear when you're at the gym. Clip it to your backpack or belt when you're on the go. If you want, you can even clip it out of sight. Whether you're walking, running, cycling, or skiing, you'll always have your favorite songs and playlists with you.

Your Music Library to Go

Store More Music
It's hard to believe that something so small could carry so much music. But now that the iPod shuffle has 4 GB, you have plenty of room to store up to 1,000 songs. Load up all the music you want, and hit the road for as long as you like. Slide the switch to "Shuffle," and get ready for the most unpredictable ride of your life. Or slide the switch to "Play in Order" to hear your playlists from start to finish.

Multiple Playlists
You've probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. You have one for your commute, another one for the gym, and then a few more for just chilling out. Now, with the iPod shuffle 3G, you can sync them all and take them wherever you go. Up to 4 GB gives you plenty of room to hold a playlist for every occasion--which means you'll always have the perfect mix to match your activity or mood. And with VoiceOver telling you the name of each playlist, you can easily switch between them and find the one you want. You also can have audiobooks and podcasts on your iPod shuffle. Audiobooks will be put into separate playlists automatically, and podcast episodes will be grouped together in a Podcasts playlist.

Nearly half the size of the previous iPod shuffle and smaller than a AA battery. Click to enlarge.

Includes Apple earbud earphones with remote and mic as well as an iPod shuffle USB cable. Click to see how controls work.

Easy Access Controls
You'll find controls for the new iPod shuffle in two locations. On the right earbud cord, you'll find the controls that let you interact with your music. And on the top of the iPod shuffle, there's a switch that lets you choose to shuffle, to play your songs in order, or to turn off your iPod shuffle.

Using the Apple Earphones with Remote
All the controls you need to interact with your music--adjusting volume, changing songs, switching playlists, and hearing song titles and artist names--are built into the Apple Earphones with Remote. You control the iPod shuffle by pressing the top, center, or bottom button on the control. This makes it easy to navigate your music and activate the VoiceOver feature, without taking your eyes off what you're doing.

The first time you set up VoiceOver on your computer, iTunes automatically downloads and installs the VoiceOver Kit. Click to enlarge.

Three-Way Switch
The new iPod shuffle now has a stainless steel switch with three positions that let you choose how you want to listen to your music. Slide it to the left to shuffle your songs. Slide it to the middle to play your songs in order. Or slide it to the right to turn everything off.

Also, an LED on the top of the iPod shuffle displays such things as syncing and battery status.

Introducing VoiceOver
VoiceOver is the exciting new feature that makes iPod shuffle the first music player that talks to you. It entirely changes the way you browse and navigate your music. Say you're listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. With the press of a button, VoiceOver tells you--without interrupting your music. But the fun doesn't stop with songs. For the first time ever on an iPod shuffle, you can have multiple playlists, and VoiceOver announces their names, too. So you can easily find the right mix without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you're doing.

How It Works
A lot of work has gone into creating an iPod shuffle that not only talks, but says the right things. It all begins with iTunes and its seamless integration with iPod. iTunes reads your song information, then uses the new VoiceOver Kit to generate the announcements for the songs, artists, and playlists on your iPod shuffle. You'll hear different voices depending on what type of computer system you use when you sync your iPod shuffle. If you sync it with a PC or with a Mac running Mac OS X Tiger, you'll hear the English voice included in the VoiceOver Kit. And since Mac OS X Leopard already has an amazing English voice built in, that's the one you'll hear when you sync your iPod shuffle with a Mac running Leopard.

Multiple Languages
Your music library may have songs from all over the world--a love song from France, a bolero from Spain, a pop tune from Japan. Luckily, VoiceOver speaks in 14 languages. iTunes automatically selects the language and best voice for your song titles and artist names. It looks at song data, like the title, artist, and album information, then applies intelligent algorithms to choose the right language. For example, iTunes recognizes the song "Ya Viene el Sol" by Ozomatli as a Spanish song, so your iPod shuffle will automatically speak that song title and artist name in Spanish. If you'd prefer to hear song titles and artist names spoken in a specific language, you can change the designated VoiceOver language in iTunes. Just select one or more songs, choose Get Info from the File menu, and then select the VoiceOver language in the Options pane.

Environmental Status Report
iPod shuffle embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress. It is designed with the following features to reduce environmental impact:

  • Brominated flame retardant free

  • PVC free

  • Highly recyclable aluminum enclosure

  • Smaller, more compact packaging (40% smaller, 33% lighter)

VoiceOver Kit
The first time you set up VoiceOver on your computer, iTunes automatically downloads and installs the VoiceOver Kit, which enables your iPod shuffle to speak in 14 different languages:

  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Czech
  • Dutch
  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

 "useless" 2009-09-05
By Jess (Virginia)
The sound and playlist feature were great, when I was constantly holding the earphones in and could appreciate it!! however the earphones were horrible. They didn't stay in my ear for more than 3 seconds at a time (while sitting fairly motionless reading a book). On top of that you can't use other earphones with it because the controls for the device are on the headphone wire. So, basically the whole thing was unusable.

 "Ackward iPOD control button" 2009-09-05
By H. Ling
The position of the control is too close to ear bud. In order to make changes, you often have to take the ear bud out to do it. This design is a step backward compares to earlier generations of iPODs.

"Excellent provided you own adaptor for your earphones" 2009-09-04
By A. Altman (San Carlos, California United States)
Now that Scosche has produced Tapline and Tapstick, we have our choice of means to use ANY earphones with this generation shuffle. I use my Westone UM3x earphones with Tapline and the new shuffle and could not be happier. It sounds great, easy to use, tiny little ipod with 4 Gig's making all that great music!

Without the adaptors to use my favorite earphones, I have no use for this shuffle at all.

Yeah the adaptors add expense - $20 for Tapline or $30 for Tapstick - but it's not all that much money in the scheme of things. 4 Gig!

Fun.

"ipod nano 4th gen/poor quality of box" 2009-08-14

The Ipod itself was in new condition.

The clear hard plastic box was covered in glue and looked beat up. This was especially frustrating since it was a gift for my son.

Shipping was fast.

We ordered this item on 8/3/09 and it was shipped on 8/9/09 (Sunday ?). On inquiry, we are to expect delivery by 8/15/09. That is 12 days. Would not have ordered if I had known! There is not much info on delivery at the website for this item. There is a world of info on everything else. This is enough to avoid this website for this item or similar items.

 "Gorgeous" 2009-08-10
By Randy Phillips (Central Calif)
I have an older Sony 1gb and a Sansa 260 4 GB but I always wanted to check out the ipods. I just ordered the new 8GB Sansa view for myself and ordered a new battery for my older sansa. My girlfriend asked me for an ipod and this seemed like the perfect time to get a first hand look. As soon as I opened the clear plastic box of the 8GB silver nano I was really impressed with how small thin sleek and gorgeous it is. The touch wheel is a wonderful design, just a bit too sensitive though. First thing I noticed was the total lack of instructions. I cudnt get RealPlayer to acknowledge the device. Finaly I got online and found out I had to download this software called itunes. Got that downloaded and then had to register it b4 it cud put my first songs on it. Then I had to search the PC for my music files and finally I plugged the ipod into the usb. It tried autosyncing every song but my file was larger than 8gb so I had to go thru the entire library and check off each individual song I didnt want to import. This was getting extremely frustrating. After several hours I was able to get my first 40 or so songs on the device. It has good sound and the earbud audio quality is surprisingly good. Wont stay in though. I still can't figure out how to delete songs on the device or how to add photos and videos and believe me, I been trying. Why is it so darn difficult to use this software? Am I the only one to see the insanity of using this deletive itunes. My new sansa has just as good of sound quality, has a micro sd slot to easily add 8gb more, has FM, voice recording, delete individual songs from the unit, FM recording and of course the video and photo viewers and the same size screen as the ipod. And hey, its easy to use, simple drag an drop using any software. And its half the cost. Just not as pretty. My girlfriend livs out of town and I told her some of the probs I was having w the device and she said I dont care I want an ipod. Im still awaiting the arrival of my new Sansa View, it has a new improved similar thin design as the ipod now. Compared to my older sansa this ipod sucks, mostly just bcuz of the software. It wud b going back to the store pronto if I just had som bigger kahonas. I shud just return it, save som money, get her a sansa view, but, haha, well u know.

"one of the best gifts ever" 2009-08-07
By Lisa Shaffer (Bealeton, VA)
I received this as a birthday gift. I'm not really into any type of tech stuff and have always been satisfied with just listening to the radio but this is the BEST thing ever! I wish I had bought one long ago! It's super easy to use. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

I plan to get my husband one for Christmas.

 "works for me" 2009-08-07
By Roger Wilson
This is the best iPod in my opinion, since it is small enough to take anywhere, including the gym, and it has a screen, which makes it easy to navigate though your music collection. I am a big fan of the Shuffle, but like having the screen, so this is a good compromise for me, since I don't want to carry around a huge iPod everywhere I go.

If you are an "active" person and use your iPod in the gym, while running, or doing anything like that, this or the Shuffle are the way to go, depending on whether or not you need a screen.

As with all iPods, the controls are intuitive. You can operate this without reading the manual. Even if you read the manual, it will take you about 3 minutes. That's how simple everything is.

Also, if you have a Mac, and I am assuming a PC, you can "plug and play" with your computer. Works great with iTunes or the Amazon mp3 store. So easy my mother could do it!

 "IPOD Shuffle" 2009-08-05
By Frank D. Ambrose (Tucson, AZ)
For the price I paid, I could have gotton one at Walmart for $10 more, brand new. The one from Amazon (O$CAR) did not come with headphones or a docking station, and was dented in. The Ipod came in the mail by its shipping date. I had to go to the store to purchase headphones and a docking station separately for another $28. I couldn't get the Ipod to upload music from my computer. I became frustrated, wrote an irate email to the seller, and found a similar item on Craigslist for $35, with headphones and docking station, which has performed perfrectly. I returned the items I purchased that did not come with the Ipod I bought from Amazon to offset the cost of the device, I have been reluctant to make any further purchases from Amazon.

 "Excellent ! Love it...." 2009-08-02
By Christopher T. Manning (USA)
I bought this specifically for the gym, using either a treadmill or elliptical. I don't wear an Ipod weight training. The size is excellnt, so small you don't even know your wearing it, I just clip in on my shorts pocket.

I didn't buy the 3rd generation because of the poor reviews involving headphone/earplug control failure due to moisture from sweat. Also the fact you can't use a different pair of earplugs which I do becasue I like mine better.

It does just what I wanted it to do, I can load up a bunch of songs & changing songs and volume is simple even while running. I also don't see why some people have a problem with the small dockinig station to recharge it. It just becomes part of my routine, come home from the gym, take it out of my gymbag with other stuff, plug it into the docking station attached to the USB on the computer, and it's gets recharged eventually before the next day. I'm always online in the evening, so it's never a problem, besides there are other charging options available if you wanted them.

I think this is an excellent product for what it is.... Not a lot of bells & whistles..... Just a small simple Ipod for active people.

"A lot of style and functionality in a small package" 2009-07-21
By Hermione Granger
This iPod represents portability at its best. I took it for a test run (literally) today, and the clip attached securely to a variety of surfaces, from the rolled waistband of my shorts to the coin pocket on my jeans. I didn't have to worry about it falling out of my pocket as I would with a regular iPod. Because there's not a screen that could be broken, I imagine it would be more durable than a Nano if dropped, though I don't particularly want to test that theory on my beloved Shuffle. :) As others have noted, it is perfect for users who work out. And the sound quality is great, too. When I compared it to my boyfriend's 16 gig, 4th generation Nano, I found that the humble Shuffle offered a crisper, clearer sound. Talk about the little engine that could! Oh, and did I mention that it's d@mn cute? I even liked the little cradle.

Many reviewers have complained about the limited features on the shuffle, from its lack of a navigation screen to its small storage space. But, as the adage goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure. I liked not having to scroll through different menu screens to find a song, and I still had enough room to add plenty of my favorite songs (though I concede that if you're going on a road trip, you will probably want a Nano or Classic). This Shuffle would be a great gift for a minimalist or a Luddite who might be overwhelmed by lots of bells and whistles. In fact, I am thinking of getting one for my technology-challenged mother, who's 50 years old. It is the cheapest item in the Apple line, which means for brand loyalists like me, there's an option that will not break the bank.
